Dr. Susanne Schwalgin
Born 1965, holds a ph d in social anthropology. She studied social anthropology, folklore studies and history of art at the universities of Bonn, Cologne and Thessaloniki, Greece. From 1996 to 2000 she worked as researcher in the research project "Cultural identity in Diaspora. A Comparative Study of Armenian Communities in Greece" at the University of Hamburg. Her dissertation "We will never forget!" – Trauma, Memory and Identity in the Armenian Diaspora in Greece", which was published in 2004 (Transcript Verlag, Bielefeld)is an outcome of this research project. From June 2002 to July 2005 Susanne Schwalgin was employed as a researcher in the research project "Gender, Ethnicity, Identity – The New Maids in the Age of Globalisation" at the University of Münster. After one year of maternity leave she is currently working as a freelancer in the field of migration and integration.
During her occupations as a researcher Susanne Schwalgin did extensive fieldwork in different local settings in Greece, Armenia and Germany. Furthermore she is teaching courses in migration, ethnic and gender studies, methodology of fieldwork and fieldwork praxis at various universities (International Women´s University, Hannover; University of Bremen; University of Hamburg; Humboldt-University; Berlin, University of Münster).
2007-2008 Susanne Schwalgin worked at the Georg-Eckert-Institut of International Textbook Research in Braunschweig concerning issues of integration/education. Since 2009 work as a freelance researcher and consultant in the area of intercultural school developement.
