Dr. Nasar Meer
My research explores the relationships between minority identities and citizenship programmes in Britain and European Union member states. I am particularly concerned with the articulation of these relationships within areas of education, anti-discrimination legislation, political participation, and public and media representation. Other research interests include a European reading of the African-American ‘founding figure’ of Sociology, W. E. B. Du Bois, and a focus upon the role of journalists as ‘public intellectuals’.I am presently involved in two research projects in the Centre for the Study of Ethnicity and Citizenship (CSEC), Department of Sociology and Bristol Institute for Public Affairs (BIPA). My role is wide-ranging but focuses upon (i) a European Commission funded research project (EMILIE: CIT5-CT-2005-028205) that examines the educational, legal and civic challenges posed by migration related diversity to Britain; and (ii) a Leverhulme funded inquiry into citizenship, religion and belonging in Britain.
